Theodore Gale in Oz (Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 5) by KuroKoneko Kamen and narrated by L. A. Johnson is an entertaining, funny, adult take on several classic fairytales. I laughed many times with this one. Refreshing and recommended…if you are new to KuroKoneko Kamen, you should start with this book.
The publisher’s summary is right on, but if you need a bit more: humor (beware it sneaks up- at one point I almost choked on my drink because I wasn’t expecting it), good and bad characters, curses, friendships, romantic relationships develop, slaves, munchkins, Dr. Doppelganger, sex, swearing, monster races, magic, dire wolves, goblins, flying monkeys, hobgoblins, betrayal, and more!
Regarding the narrator: This was L. A. Johnson’s best narration of the books I’ve listened to so far. I still struggle with some of the voices (could just be me?).
Overall, I highly recommend this story, especially if you are like me and do not care for typical fairytales or prefer yours with adult themes. You can listen/read these books out of order without causing confusion as each story is unique.
Parental guidance/trigger warnings: This is an adult retelling. Sex, talk of erections/one night stands, swearing (throughout), ogling and like things of women by the main character (think of the main character as a hornball), and death.
